Plant-based foods brand Gardein, a Conagra-owned company, announces it is expanding its Ultimate Plant-Based line with seven new food products, including bratwurst, buffalo wings and spicy chick’n fillets. Launching in June, the collection will be available in grocery stores, mass retailers and through e-commerce. Sainsbury’s Brings US Brand Gardein into the UK

US food manufacturer, Conagra Brands, has announced it will distribute the popular plant-based brand Gardein, throughout the UK in Sainsbury’s stores from next year. Gardein (garden protein) is a product line of meat-free frozen foods such as plant-based fish fillets, and chicken strips, which are produced in British Columbia, Canada.

Vancouver food company Konscious Foods announces the launch of what it calls the “first-ever” plant-based frozen sushi and onigiri. Created in partnership with Protein Industries Canada (PIC), Merit Foods, and Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds, the new products are now available at Whole Foods Markets and Choices Markets in Vancouver, with more varieties and retail locations being added.  The new line consists of eight products, with four sushi and four onigiri rolls. Konscious says the items are made from non-GMO ingredients, and provide convenient and healthy snacks or meals. Canada: Industry Partners Invest $15.3M to Develop New Line of Alt-Seafood Products

Canada’s Konscious Foods, Merit Functional Foods and Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds announce a new partnership to develop an extensive line of plant-based seafood alternatives. Created with a co-investment from Protein Industries Canada (PIC), the line will bring more than 20 sustainably sourced alt-seafood products to North American grocery stores.  A total of $15.3M has been committed to the project, including a $5.5M contribution from PIC. That investment reportedly acted as a catalyst for the innovative partnership, and allowed the project to move at a faster, more efficient pace. The new products will reportedly match the taste and texture of traditional seafood with a focus on clean-label ingredients. Panel of Judges Decide Which Plant-Based Products Compare the Most to Beef, Chicken, Fish and Pork

Consumer Reports Magazine contacts vegconomist to report it has published The Meat Lovers’ Guide to Plant-Based Meat, analyzing 32 plant-based products in the categories of “beef” burgers, “chicken” nuggets and fillets, and “pork” sausages and “fish”, to reveal which plant-based products compare the most to their animal counterparts. For the evaluation, the judges assessed on the basis of nutrition and taste. To obtain a nutrition score, CR evaluated the products based on calories, fiber, protein, iron, vitamin B12, saturated fat, and sodium, also assessing the ingredients list and penalizing those with more processed ingredients. For the sensory score, a “trained panel of sensory experts” undertook a blind tasting test, scoring the products on texture and flavor and how well they mimicked animal-based beef, chicken, pork …
