Plant Alternative, a London-based producer of 100% plant-based, restaurant quality Indian dishes called [SHICKEN], containing a realistic chick*n meat created from textured soya fibre, announces a retail agreement with Costco across the UK. American hot dog chain Wienerschnitzel announces the company is bringing Field Roast’s plant-based hot dogs to all 327 locations for a limited time.  The dogs can be made vegan by ordering without dairy-based cheese. Good Catch, which is owned by Gathered Foods, is releasing plant-based salmon burgers through a new partnership with UNFI, one of North America’s largest distributors. According to Good Catch, 30% of American seafood consumers purchase salmon each month, and it currently ranks as the most widely eaten fish in the US.  Good Catch says the new salmon burgers are the first such item produced entirely within the US. Wagamama Launches Vegan Japanese-Inspired Fish and Chips for Veganuary

UK-based Asian fusion chain Wagamama has launched a new dish — plant-based Japanese-inspired fish and chips. The “fish” is made from battered soy, pea, and rice protein, in the style of the Japanese dish tempura. Accompanying the fish is roasted sweet potato and red onion, along with Japanese style mushy peas made with edamame beans and katsu curry sauce. Other garnishes include chilli, a lemon wedge, waga tartare with Japanese pickles, and Wagamama’s firecracker sauce. Handy Seafood, Oldest Seafood Processor in USA, Debuts Plant-Based Crab Cakes

Handy Seafood, a 125-year-old seafood processor, is releasing the company’s first vegan entree.   The Plant-Based Crabless Cake is made from a proprietary blend of pea and wheat protein, and intended to recreate the texture of traditional crab cakes. Featuring a Maryland-style flavor combined with sweet peppers and onions, Handy states the entree-sized Crabless Cakes are made from responsibly sourced vegan ingredients and contain 10 grams of protein per serving.  Based in Crisfield, Maryland, Handy Seafood specializes in crab cakes and crab meat appetizers. According to a press release, the company’s entry into plant-based products was inspired by the rise of flexitarian consumers, who now make up 42% of the market. Jinka Unveils World’s First Fully Prepared Plant-Based Calamari

Alt-seafood company Jinka recently revealed what may be the first pre-cooked plant-based calamari on the retail market.  Jinka quietly previewed the novel appetizer at a recent trade show, which appears to be sold as a perishable frozen product. According to the packaging, Jinka’s tempura-battered rings offer the same taste and texture as squid calamari, along with protein and omega-3 fatty acids.  The product can be eaten in snack or appetizer form, or as the centerpiece of a meal. While labeled Non-GMO, the ingredients have not yet been specified. British company Quorn is adding five new mycoprotein-based meat alternatives to its range. US company Actual Veggies produces plant-based burgers made with vegetables instead of processed ingredients. Now, the brand has created a sweet vegan breakfast burger, offering consumers a healthier way to start the day. The new Morning Burger is made with blueberries, banana, acai, cauliflower, pumpkin seeds, dates, and blue spirulina.
