Aleph Farms Grows Slaughter-Free Beef in Space

During a joint experiment on the International Space Station (ISS), Israeli clean meat startup Aleph Farms has successfully carried out an experiment to grow beef in space, as part of its mission to provide sustainable food security on earth, by producing meat in adverse conditions without availability of land and local water resources.

Aleph Farms announces today it has successfully produced meat on the International Space Station, 248 miles (339 km) away from any natural resources, to demonstrate that meat can be “grown” in any conditions as we prepare to enter what they term a crisis in food security. The startup grows cultivated beef steaks, as part of a mission to shape the future of food by producing real meat cuts from cow cells, or “slaughter-free meat” – without harming the animals or the environment.

Through an international collaboration set to reach new heights with 3D Bioprinting Solutions (Russia), Meal Source Technologies (USA) and Finless Foods (USA)— Aleph Farms says it is making a significant progress toward fulfilling its promise: to enable on Earth unconditional access to safe and nutritious meat anytime, anywhere, while using minimal resources.

The company’s production method involves the mimicking of a natural process of muscle-tissue regeneration occurring inside the cow’s body, but under controlled conditions. This cutting-edge research was carried out in some of the most extreme environments imaginable, with methods aimed at feeding the rapidly growing population, predicted to reach 10 billion individuals by 2050.

A  historic report published on the 10th  of September 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, established by the United Nations, highlighted the integral contribution of the conventional animal farming methods on climate change, creating “a challenging situation worse and undermining food security.”

“In space, we don’t have 10,000 or 15,000 Liter (3962.58 Gallon) of water available to produce one Kg (2.205 Pound) of beef,” says Didier Toubia, Co-Founder and CEO of Aleph Farms. “This joint experiment marks a significant first step toward achieving our vision to ensure food security for generations to come, while preserving our natural resources.”
