Thai Meat Giant CP Foods Wins Award for Plant-Based MEAT ZERO Products

Thailand-based meat giant CP Foods has received Superior Taste Awards for two of its plant-based MEAT ZERO products — Nuggets and Garlic & Herb Patties.

The awards were held in Brussels, Belgium, featuring a jury of over 200 industry experts. The patties received one star, rated as Notable, while the nuggets were awarded three stars, meaning Exceptional. This is the first year CP Foods has been successful at the awards.

MEAT ZERO products are made from pea, wheat, and corn, with high-moisture extrusion used to replicate the fibrous texture of meat. CP Foods says that the nuggets are indistinguishable from conventional chicken nuggets, while the patties are ideal for making katsu burgers.

CP Foods and alt-protein

After selling over four million units in Thailand, MEAT ZERO launched in Singapore last year, announcing that it intended to become Asia’s top alt-meat brand. Earlier in 2022, Subway Thailand began offering a sandwich made with MEAT ZERO’s patty, aimed mainly at health-conscious consumers. The brand also supplies its plant-based chicken to KFC Thailand.

CP Foods is also working with other players in the alt-meat industry — it has partnered with Israel’s Future Meat Technologies to develop hybrid cultivated and plant-based meat for the Asian market. Additionally, the Thai company has joined forces with San Francisco’s Lypid to improve the fat used in its plant-based meats.

“The future looks bright for meatless meals, with the number of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians altogether constituting about 29% of the global population,” said Mr. Prasit Boondoungprasert, Chief Executive Officer of CP Foods. “MEAT ZERO’s affordable price point will make this lifestyle more accessible to those who are looking to adopt a sustainable diet. The incredible taste will also convert sceptics.”
