Mighty Yum Reformulates Plant-Based Lunch Kit Recipes in Response to Demand for Healthier Options for Kids

Mighty Yum has introduced a new formulation for its plant-based Munchables lunch kits, responding to consumer demand for healthier food options.

The redeveloped Turkey and Cheese, and Ham and Cheese varieties now exclude soy and the plant-based meat is now free of gluten, enhancing their appeal to parents seeking nutritious choices for their children. These products have also achieved certification from Merieux NutriSciences for being free from harmful additives.

The reformulation involved replacing the original soy and gluten bases in the ham and turkey products with a mix of vegetables, including parsnips, chickpeas, sweet potatoes, and tomato puree.

Nutritional alternative to traditional lunch kits

Founded by Marc Elkman and Howard Panes, both fathers and entrepreneurs with a background in health and nutrition, Mighty Yum aims to combine fun with health in its product offerings. The company’s lunch kits, which launched in 2022, are designed with vibrant packaging and flavors that appeal to young palates, playing on the popular and nostalgic Lunchables kits but with a significantly improved nutritional panel.

They include varieties like Ham and Cheese, Turkey and Cheese, and Pepperoni Pizza. Munchables do not contain dairy, nuts, or GMOs, and they also received kosher certification from the Orthodox Union last year.

The company stated in a Q&A, “Mighty Yum contains only a fraction of the sodium than in a traditional Lunch kit. We are a plant-based alternative to a traditional lunch kit that has higher amounts of sodium and other fats, providing more protein in every bite. Mighty Yum is a real game changer in the way for kids to eat healthy on the run, with plant-based fun for everyone.”

Expanding distribution network

The introduction of the new lunch kits follows the expansion of Mighty Yum’s distribution network last year, which now includes partnerships with online retailers like Hungryroot, UNFI, Earth Fare, and over 600 convenience stores throughout the Northeastern US. Mighty Yum products are also available in select Target stores nationwide.

“The recipe reformulation further supports our mission to be the trusted better-for-you brand”

Scott Kerner, chief operating officer of Mighty Yum, commented, “We’ve always been proud of the Munchables line, which offers nutrition and convenience that pleases parents and flavor that delights kids. The recipe reformulation further supports our mission to be the trusted better-for-you brand that offers the most innovative plant-powered ingredients across our product line.”
