Rebellyous Opens Vegan Chicken Factory in Old Meat Processing Plant

Seattle startup Rebellyous has taken over an old West Seattle meat-processing plant with the aim to convert the building into a prototype vegan poultry factory, and has plans to convert further meat factories in the future.

Rebellyous, originally known as Seattle Food Tech is “bringing plant protein to the people” by revamping America’s most classic comfort foods, and is led by a former Boeing engineer. The company initially launched as a food production startup creating plant meat for food service, using innovative manufacturing technology which can produce the product on a large scale.

With this unique technology, Rebellyous says it can beat the poultry industry in terms of production, efficiency, and sustainability. “We see our new headquarters as the launching pad for a re-imagined poultry industry. We are building a facility that can match Big Chicken’s efficiency without the negative impacts on the animals, the environment, and the humans involved,” Rebellyous founder Christie Lagally told VegNews.

According to VegNews, the startup plans to convert more meat production facilities into factories for plantbased chicken nuggets, in order to make the products on an affordable level.

The Rebellyous CEO writes here for Food Dive about the poultry industry and its associated sustainability issues.
