Shiok Meats Named as Fast Company Most Innovative Companies in Asia-Pac

Fast Company has named Singapore’s Shiok Meats as one of the top ten most innovative companies in Asia Pacific. The startup, which aims to disrupt the $40 billion shrimp market, last year secured $4.6 million in seed funding for its development of clean seafood.

Shiok Meats, founded by Dr. Sandhya Sriram in 2018, has successfully demonstrated its lab-grown shrimp and plans to make the finished product available in foodservice in 2020. The news comes at a point when Singapore is emerging as a powerhouse of foodtech, as detailed in our report here.

Dr Sandhya Sriram

Speaking to vegconomist in January last year, Dr. Sandhya stated: “We are the first cell-based meat company in South East Asia having our target market as Asia-Pacific where 60% of the world’s population is. Shiok Meats is one of the very few clean meat companies working on seafood and what differentiates is that we are based in Asia, serving the Asian market, run by two strong Asian founders who understand the Asian market and who have extensive experience in the field of cellular agriculture.”

Commenting to us about this recent success, the founder stated yesterday: “We are extremely happy and honoured to be named as one of the most innovative companies by Fast Company – it truly shows that we are committed to creating innovative solutions to today’s dying oceans by producing cell-based seafood for everyone.”
