Wakao Foods Exports “India’s Largest” Plant-Based Meat Shipment to the US

Indian alt meat brand Wakao Foods has begun exporting its jackfruit-based products, sending a 13-tonne container — said to be India’s largest ever plant-based meat shipment — to the US.

The milestone was celebrated in a ceremony at Kochi Port, featuring notable Indian dignitaries such as IAS Rajesh Agrawal, chairman of APEDA (The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority). The container is the first of two that will be exported.

“We are extremely excited to expand our reach to the United States”

Agrawal said that India’s demand for plant-based meat was growing rapidly, creating opportunities to take advantage of the country’s crop biodiversity. He added that the production of crops such as jackfruit has benefits for farmers and is helping to diversify the protein supply, addressing malnutrition.

“Dynamic food scene”

Wakao Foods claims to be the first Indian company to make meat alternatives from jackfruit. The brand offers a range of products, including burgers, sausages, and jackfruit pieces (both plain and seasoned). All products are shelf-stable, with a year-long shelf life at ambient temperatures.

For the US launch, Wakao has spent eight months developing products specifically catered to American tastes, including American Herb sausages and BBQ Jack.

“We are extremely excited to expand our reach to the United States with India’s biggest plant-based food consignment and look at exploring the dynamic food scene in the USA,” said Sairaj Dhond, founder and CEO of Wakao Foods. “Our popular products have gained popularity in India and other markets. We are confident that the vibrant food enthusiasts in the USA will appreciate the authentic flavors and quality of our jackfruit products. This expansion is a significant step for Wakao Foods, as we aim to establish a strong presence in the United States.”
