DSM-Firmenich will introduce its upcycled protein isolate Vertis CanolaPRO and showcase its latest plant-based prototypes — smoked salmon with cream cheese, pulled beef, and longer-shelf-life yogurt — at Fi Europe 2024 from November 19 to 21 in Frankfurt, Germany.
Vertis CanolaPRO is made from canola meal, a co-product of canola oil production, one of the world’s most plentiful crops. The ingredient is produced using a proprietary process with minimal water use, low temperatures, and zero solvents.
Allergen-free, the protein isolate is said to deliver all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source. It serves as a functional ingredient, enhancing the texture of plant-based meat, seafood, and dairy and the nutrition of sports bars and beverages. DSM-Firmenich will showcase Vertis CanolaPRO protein in other applications, such as tortillas and breakfast cereals, to demonstrate its versatility.
“With 30% of all food produced globally currently lost or going to waste, widespread adoption of upcycled ingredients could really raise the standard of sustainable food production. These ingredients are not only safe and nutritionally valuable but also come from verifiable supply chains, adding an extra layer of trust and transparency for consumers,” Fatima Zoundri, Director of Sustainability, Taste, Texture and Health at DSM-Firmenich, said in a recent editorial piece for vegconomist.
Other prototypes and presentations
The company will also showcase its innovations in beverages, baking, confectionery, dairy, and savory items. DSM-Firmenich says its new developments focus on “healthier, more delicious & better for people and planet,” with solutions for reduced sugar, salt, and saturated fats products and more sustainability with plant proteins, as seen with Vertis CanolaPRO.
In addition to the plant-based products, attendees can sample other prototypes, including PeptoPro recovery drinks, reduced-sugar apricot-flavored gummies, a new BBQ sauce, and smoked mini frankfurters.
Additionally, visitors can attend presentations hosted by DSM-Firmenich experts on sugar reduction, health benefits, AI-powered fermentation, and bakery solutions, including techniques to improve whole wheat bread using enzymes.
Plant-based for sustainability
DSM-Firmenich, created through a 2022 merger of DSM and Firmenich, offers nutrition, health, and beauty solutions. With operations in nearly 60 countries and substantial revenues, the company is a global leader committed to creating sustainable solutions that appeal to consumers.
The firm recently opened a new pilot plant in Plainsboro, New Jersey, to develop healthier, plant-based and dairy beverages through partner collaboration. The pilot plant focuses on scaling from the lab to small-batch production.
“Food production is estimated to be responsible for 25% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Adopting more plant-based foods is a powerful step toward a more sustainable future,” DSM-Firmenich said in the announcement.
