Stella McCartney has announced a second take on her version of the iconic sports shoe, the Stan Smith, in collaboration with the second-largest sportswear brand globally, Adidas. Following the success on the debut vegan Stan Smith last year, the new release date is December 2nd, 2019, in time for Christmas and the Spring 2020.
The ‘leather’ upper is synthetic. The Stans’ usual glues are replaced with animal-free alternatives as glues typically used in the production of shoes and accessories derive from fish or animals, and are heavy with chemicals which are harmful to the environment.
The classic sports shoe features the Three Stripes pattern rendered in laser-cut stars. The design pays homage to both McCartney and legendary tennis player Stan Smith, portraits of them appear on the left and right tongue, respectively.
Ms McCartney told British Vogue, “The younger generation is standing up and telling us that our house is on fire and that we need to respond like we are in a crisis. As one of the most polluting industries in the world, the fashion industry is now at a crossroads. We need to come together and achieve sustainable change to build a better future.”
