UK-based family kitchen, Higgidy, have launched their first vegan product to their Meatless & Marvellous range. The award-winning producers of pies, sausage rolls, frittatas and quiches, describe their meat-free range as “Gloriously imperfect feelgood food with vegans and vegetarians in mind.”
Higgidy’s existing meat-free range consists of five vegetarian pastry goods. This first vegan recipe, Warming & Wondrous Roasted Sweet Potato & Red Onion Parcels, was introduced in Waitrose supermarkets from May this year in response to the rising demand for entirely plant-based options. Assistant Brand Manager Amy Bellchambers says that the new vegan offering is “Made from hand-folded vegan pastry with a spiced tomato and lentil filling, with chilli-roasted sweet potato and red onion, then topped with millet and black onion seed.”
The sweet potato and red onion parcels retail at £3.50 for 2 parcels and are currently available only in UK branches of Waitrose. At present the vegan pastry is listed as containing “Sustainable palm oil” in its ingredients. Many vegans and palm oil activists argue that the notion of sustainable palm oil is a myth, and cite alternatives such as rapeseed, coconut and hemp.
