Big Idea Ventures, in collaboration with Mars Petcare, AAK, and Bühler, has announced the launch of the Next Generation Pet Food Program. This initiative seeks to foster innovation in the pet food industry by engaging human food startups to develop sustainable solutions for pet nutrition.
The program is particularly focused on reducing carbon emissions through the development of novel ingredients, sustainable protein and fat sources, and advanced processing technologies.
“A better world for pets also means a more sustainable world for pets, people and for the planet”
This initiative is a joint effort by several industry leaders. Mars Petcare, known for its contributions to veterinary care and pet nutrition, is partnering with AAK, a company specializing in plant-based oils and fats, and Bühler, a global provider of technology for food and feed production. Together, these companies aim to support startups that can introduce innovations such as upcycling food waste and developing sustainable alternatives to traditional animal fats used in pet food.
According to Andrew D. Ive, founder and managing general partner of Big Idea Ventures, “This initiative aims to highlight the exciting opportunity for developing sustainable pet food products. It represents a significant step forward in fostering innovative, eco-friendly solutions within the pet food industry.”
Fostering innovation in pet food
Elise Malandain, vice president of R&D at Mars Petcare, added that the program aligns with Mars Petcare’s purpose of creating “a better world for pets” through sustainability and innovation. Mars Petcare says, “A better world for pets also means a more sustainable world for pets, people, and for the planet.”
Startups selected for the program will have the opportunity to collaborate with industry experts and develop their innovations with the support of major consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies. They will also gain access to Singapore’s foodtech ecosystem, culminating in a presentation at the Singapore International AgriFood Week in November.
Industry collaboration
AAK and Bühler also expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. Dr. Ian Roberts, CTO at Bühler, noted, “Ensuring a sustainable source of pet nutrition requires new ideas, technologies, and innovative practices.
“Collaborative innovation between industry leaders like Mars Petcare and Big Idea Ventures attracts start-ups from both within and beyond the pet care sector, supporting them in scaling their solutions to enhance the sustainability of pet nutrition. We are eager to see the innovative solutions that will emerge from this program!”
The program is open to startups from all regions, although those based in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications are due by September 10, 2024.
