IKEA Brings Famous Plant Dog to USA, Priced Less Than Meat Hot Dog at Just 70 Cents

IKEA has introduced a new addition to its plant-based menu offerings in the United States with the launch of the Plant Dog. Priced at just seventy cents, this latest food item is set to join a variety of meat-free options already available at IKEA, including Plant Balls, Veggie Balls, and Veggie Dogs.

The introduction of the Plant Dog to the US market follows its introduction in Europe, where it has been available since last summer.

“The plant-based hot dog is a perfect alternative to a traditional iconic hot dog”

Unlike IKEA’s Veggie Dog, which is made with kale, lentils, quinoa, onions, and wheat protein, the Plant Dog has been designed to more closely mimic a traditional hot dog. It utilizes ingredients such as rice protein, apple, and onion, along with seasonings to achieve a smoky flavor.

Helene von Reis, food manager at IKEA of Sweden, commented on the new plant-based offering last year, saying, “We have spent much time in the development process to give the best experience for our customers. With a great taste, texture, and a snap when you bite it, the plant-based hot dog is a perfect alternative to a traditional iconic hot dog.”

IKEA’s commitment to sustainability is further underscored by its efforts to increase the availability of plant-based food items, with goals to be 50% plant-based by 2025. The company’s sustainability report last year indicated that plant-based offerings are a significant aspect of its strategy to reduce emissions. The popularity of these alternatives is on the rise, with plant-based versions of IKEA’s Swedish meatballs, such as the veggie balls and plant balls, now accounting for 17% of frozen meatball sales, according to the company.

Lower climate impact nudge

Starting today, the Plant Dog will be offered at IKEA Bistros across US stores at seventy cents, making it affordable for customers. This pricing strategy extends to other items on the menu, with the Veggie Dog now priced at sixty-five cents and the traditional hot dog at seventy-five cents.

To celebrate the Plant Dog’s introduction, IKEA has planned a “Plant Dog Baby Shower” event at all its US locations on Thursday, April 11, offering guests the opportunity to sample the new addition and engage in Plant Dog-themed activities.

“We’re excited to launch the Plant Dog in the US. We know that our hot dogs are beloved by many and we’re proud to expand our plant-based foods for customers. Our ambition is to make healthier and more sustainable eating easy, desirable and affordable, without compromising on taste,” said Paul Fite, Country Food Manager, IKEA US.
