Animal rights charity PETA has published a list titled “The UK’s Best Vegan Fish and Chips Spots”, highlighting eateries around the country serving plant-based versions of the classic British dish.
Among the top-rated spots are:
- The Good Catch Co — Founded by activist Ed Winters (Earthling Ed) and his business partner Kevyn Bourke, this plant-based fish and chip shop in Brighton has an impressive menu featuring battered “cod” and smoked “haddock”, along with Popcorn Prawnz, lemon “shrimp”, and vegan calamari. In 2021, Winters and Bourke told vegconomist that their aim was to “take on the fish and chip industry”.
- Harbour Lights — This Falmouth shop has been recognised for its tofu-based vegan fish, which is marinated in brine and lemon juice before being wrapped in nori and deep fried. The store also offers homemade smoky jackfruit “fish” cakes with a vegan mayo dip.
- Sutton and Sons — A chain of three fish and chip shops in London, offering banana blossom “fish”, vegan scampi, a plant-based fish burger, and “prawn” cocktail. Three other London eateries also made the list — Unity Diner (also founded by Earthling Ed), Brockley’s Rock, and The Dove.

- Milton Fish & Chips — A shop in Pembrokeshire, Wales, serving golden-battered banana blossom “fish”.
- The Ship Inn — A fully vegan Newcastle pub offering marinated tofu that is wrapped in nori and beer-battered. The “fish” is accompanied by chunky chips, minted peas, and homemade tartare sauce.
- Holy Cow — A vegan cafe in Edinburgh, Scotland, serving a plant-based mackerel patty with pickles and banana shallots on the side. Two other Scottish eateries are also featured on the list — Land & Sea Fish and Chips and Mono Cafe and Bar.
- Hungry Horse — A nationwide pub chain serving Omni fishless fillets coated in a golden batter.
The list is completed by Seabreeze Fish & Chips (North Yorkshire), Lucy’s Chips (Norwich), Shakey Shakey (Ramsgate), Earth and Stars (Brighton), Simpsons Fish and Chips (Stroud), and Papa’s Fish and Chips (11 locations UK-wide).
“PETA’s top picks will help people see food differently, and we’re calling on caring individuals everywhere to leave the violence of the fishing industry in the past by enjoying some delicious, hearty vegan seafood,” said PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr.
