Vegan steaks by the Dutch manufacturer Vivera have been available in the British supermarket chain Tesco since the end of May. Since the steaks – available in over 400 Tesco stores – sold 40,000 units in the first week, Vivera has announced that it will continue to increase production in order to avoid empty shelves in the future.
Accordingly, production of the plant-based steaks is to be increased to 100,000 units per week. Vivera’s commercial manager, Gert Jan Gombert, apologised for the empty shelves and announced increased availability. Even the manufacturers themselves had not expected such great success. “The consumers in England are almost without exception very enthusiastic about the taste and texture of the steak,” says Gombert. Since June 11th, the steaks have also been available in Dutch and Belgian stores.
