IFF to Exhibit Plant-Based Softgel Technology, Gummies, & More at Vitafoods Europe

IFF, a global corporation creating products for sectors such as food, beverages, health, and biosciences, is set to showcase some of its plant-based and cellulosic-derived pharmaceutical solutions at the nutraceutical trade show Vitafoods Europe.

Designed for dietary supplements and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, the clean-label solutions meet manufacturers’ needs for plant-based formulations, purity, and consistent quality. The event marks the first time IFF will exhibit its full clean-label portfolio for oral dosage forms.

The solutions include:

  • Tablets and Capsules: High-performance cellulose-based ingredients, binders, and disintegrants such as Avicel®, Endurance®, METHOCEL™, and Ac-Di-Sol® enable the production of consumer-friendly formats for nutritional supplements and OTC products. Specific low nitrite grades are also available.
  • Release Solutions: METHOCEL™ water-soluble cellulose ethers improve efficacy for immediate and controlled-release formulations. They can be used for plant-based hard-shell capsules, coating, granulation, and tablets.
  • Clean-Label Coatings: GRINDSTED® pectin can be implemented into traditional tablet coating processes. The delayed-release, alginate-based coating system Aquateric® N100 is also available and ensures optimal nutrient delivery.
  • Vegan Softgel Technology: IFF’s vegan soft capsule technologies, such as SeaGel® and VERDIGEL™ SC, are said to outperform competing technologies and even their animal-based counterparts.
  • Plant-Based Gummies: Gelcarin® and GRINDSTED® Pectin PRM make it possible to produce heat-stable, gelatin-free gummies with excellent sensory properties, stability, processing, and delivery.

Addressing consumer demands

While many medications currently contain animal ingredients, companies are increasingly working to address the demand for plant-based alternatives. Recent innovations include the development of pea-based gelatin alternatives for capsules, insulin produced using lettuce, and plant-based medical nutrition drinks.

Food industry research indicates that clean-label products could constitute more than 70% of portfolios within the next two years, with a huge 99% of manufacturers viewing these foods as a cornerstone of their business strategy. It seems increasingly likely that similar trends will be seen in the pharmaceutical industry.

“Our plant-based ingredients are meeting the rising demand for clean-label products,” said Dr. Michael Baumann, marketing manager for Pharma Solutions at IFF. “From creating aesthetically pleasing tablets to developing high-quality and efficacious immediate release and enteric coatings, our solutions are backed by sound science to address health-conscious consumer demands.”

Vitafoods Europe takes place from May 14-16 in Geneva, Switzerland. IFF will be at booth E90.
