Microalgae protein producer Brevel has signed a development and commercialization agreement with Israel’s Central Bottling Company (CBC Group) to develop functional beverages and dairy alternatives.
The ten-year purchase agreement will see Brevel supply CBC Group with microalgae protein, oils, and antioxidants. As part of the alliance, CBC Group made a strategic investment in Brevel’s most recent funding round.
To cultivate microalgae, Brevel uses a “breakthrough process” combining light with sugar fermentation in indoor bioreactors. This allows for the production of large quantities of microalgae without genetic modification. Microalgae is naturally rich in protein, lipids, fiber, and bioactive antioxidants derived from photosynthesis.
Brevel’s process produces a neutral-tasting white powder consisting of 60-70% microalgae protein concentrate. Its functional properties are said to replicate the textures, flavors, and behavior of animal proteins, meaning the ingredient can be integrated into meat and dairy alternatives to boost their protein content.

“This co-venture will be instrumental”
The news comes after Brevel established a commercial facility in southern Israel in 2024, with the capacity to produce hundreds of tons of microalgae powder per year. Fermentation is traditionally limited to dark environments, but Brevel’s process allows for large-scale production using light. The facility aims to demonstrate that the company’s technology is viable for real-world applications.
CBC Group is Israel’s largest beverage company and the national franchiser for global brands such as Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, and Muller, along with major domestic juice and dairy brands. The company also has a strong presence in Eastern Europe and the South Africa/MENA region.
“We feel extremely fortunate to collaborate with, and enjoy the support of, such a major force in the beverage arena not only in Israel but also internationally,” said Yonatan Golan, Brevel’s co-founder and CEO. “This co-venture will be instrumental in keeping Brevel at the forefront of developments in food-tech and climate-tech. Our first commercial pilot plant is already primed to meet the first wave of our joint business development goals, delivering great tasting, better-for-you, sustainably sourced products to the growing population of health-conscious consumers.”
