Fooditive Receives Investment from Sparkalis After Developing Vegan Honey, Casein, & More

Food tech venture fund Sparkalis has acquired a minority stake in Netherlands-based Fooditive, a producer of sustainable plant-based ingredients.

Sparkalis’ managing director, Filip Arnaut, will now join ten other food tech experts on Fooditive’s advisory board, providing the company with insights as it works to create ingredients that benefit animals, the planet, and human health.

“Sparkalis has acquired a stake in Fooditive because we share the same vision for the future of the food industry. We are both committed to facilitating innovative solutions that will change the way we think about food production and create a more sustainable footprint for the industry,” said Arnaut.

Animal-free innovations

Fooditive has already developed numerous vegan alternatives to ingredients that are usually animal-based. Last year, the company unveiled its vegan honey, made by copying the DNA of conventional honey and using fermentation enzymes to produce a bee-free alternative.

In 2021, Fooditive launched an upcycled natural sweetener made from apples and pears, along with what was claimed to be the food industry’s first vegan casein. Like the company’s honey, the casein is made using fermentation.

Fooditive also recently became the first food industry signatory to the Washington Compact, a new agreement on conducting business operations in outer space.

“Our partnership with Sparkalis will give Fooditive access to many countries worldwide where we do not already have a market presence. This will enable us to take our innovations to a wider audience, and in doing so, bring about the changes that are needed to ensure the food supply chains of the future are truly sustainable,” said Fooditive CEO and founder Moayad Abushokhedim.
