Ananas Anam Partners With FORVIA for Pineapple-Based Automotive Interiors

Ananas Anam has announced a collaboration with automotive technology leader FORVIA to develop vehicle interior materials made from waste pineapple leaf fibres.

The two companies have formed a Joint Development Agreement, with Ananas Anam contributing its knowledge of developing eco-friendly pineapple-based materials and FORVIA bringing its expertise in automotive technology. The news comes as the latter company launches MATERI’ACT, a new unit with the purpose of developing sustainable materials.

Sustainable car interiors

At the beginning of 2022, sustainability was described as a key trend in the automotive industry. It was recently reported that all BMW and Mini cars will have fully vegan interiors from next year, while a study in May found that 70% of drivers would be interested in purchasing an animal-free car. A market report published last year suggests that the global automotive vegan leather market will grow with a huge CAGR of 48% through to 2026.

Ananas Anam collaborations

The agreement with FORVIA is the latest in a series of collaborations for Ananas Anam in recent years. The company, which told vegconomist it was “building a new plant-based ecosystem”, partnered with Saucony earlier in 2022 to develop pineapple leather sneakers.

Ananas has also been working with Dole, the world’s largest fresh produce company, to source pineapple waste for its materials. Meanwhile, iconic brands such as Selfridges and Nike have launched products made with Ananas’ leather alternative.

“With a strong client presence already in the footwear, accessories, and fashion markets, this Joint Development Agreement marks the next stage of ANANAS ANAM’s evolution by diversifying our product offering into the automotive sector,” said the company.
