Burger King Opens Meat-Free Popups in Three Nordic Cities

Burger King has opened three meat-free popup restaurants in the cities of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen. Customers in the Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish capitals can now choose from a range of offerings made using The Vegetarian Butcher’s plant-based meat — including meat-free versions of classic options such as the Whopper and Chicken Royale. Some sauces containing eggs and dairy are still available, but customers can ask for these to be omitted to make their orders fully vegan. “By opening a restaurant that only serves plant-based and meat-free alternatives, we get a good opportunity to test products that are not yet part of our traditional menu for our further product development and innovation within the plant-based segment,” said Carsten Lambrecht, country manager for Burger King Denmark. …

With two advertising trucks emblazoned with tongue-in-cheek slogans, BK makes a cheeky comment on the smaller offering from Mcdonald’s in comparison to its much larger plant-based range. One truck reads “Hello you two (referring to the McDonald’s plant-based nuggets and burger) – welcome to the family!”, while the other reads “Better late than beef”. “We think it’s great that McDonald’s is now offering plant-based products – albeit on a small scale. This allows even more people to try plant-based fast food. …

The fast-food giant has already demonstrated what the future could look like in an experiment in a restaurant in Vienna’s Margaretengürtel, where plant-based products became the new normal. Those who ordered without expressing a special request for “meat” received a veggie burger. And those who wanted to eat the popular meat dishes had to say so explicitly. Normal or with meat? Since 12th July, the campaign slogan “Normal or with meat?” can be read throughout …
