Agribusiness giant Cargill, one of the largest meat producers in the US, believes it can take on plant-based companies such as Beyond Meat to become a major player in the meat alternatives industry. While Cargill came relatively late to the plant-based market, behind competitors such as Tyson and Smithfield, the company told CNBC that this was part of a “deliberate and thoughtful” strategy. Cargill, the world’s third-largest meat producer, unveiled the first product of its collaboration with Spanish startup Cubiq Foods at Expo West last week. The company sampled new plant-based burgers made with Cubiq’s Go!Drop fat replacement technology, which is said to reduce the fat content and calories of alt-meats.
