BSF & CellRev Form New Venture ‘Cultivated Meat Technologies Limited’ to Mass-Produce Cultivated Meat

Two UK firms, BSF Enterprise, owner of the UK clinical and cell ag company 3D Bio-Tissues (3DBT), and bioprocessing company CellRev, will combine their resources and expertise to launch a new company focused on the mass production of cultivated meat. BSF Enterprise (LSE: BSFA), (OTCQB: BSFAF), announced the exclusive joint venture, revealing they had already entered a Terms Sheet and expect to form the biotech in the coming months. The news follows the UK’s government recently announced a £2 billion plan to seize the potential of biotechnology. UK bioprocessing company CellRev has published a white paper titled The Future of Commercial-Scale Cell Manufacturing, highlighting the challenges and opportunities faced by the cellular agriculture industry. The paper gives the opinions of experts from across the industry, finding that innovation is needed in all areas. Increased scale will be necessary to make cultivated products mainstream and commercially viable; this will require facilities that can produce huge quantities of cells, which will only be possible with considerable investment. However, livestock farmers currently receive far more public funding than cultivated meat companies. A recently announced joint development agreement (JDA) between UK bioprocessing company CellRev and Saint-Gobain Life Sciences (SGLS), a global leader in fluid management solutions, aims to create the “industry-first” cell media rejuvenation process for cellular product developers and manufacturers. Through the JDA, the companies will use their expertise to design and develop a “game-changing” solution to recycle cell media to reduce waste, thus reducing the costs of cultivating meat or any other cell-based product. Cell culture media is an unavoidable but expensive component of the cell culture process. As the cultivated meat field scales, reducing its cost and waste will be crucial to producing products at lower prices.
