Extracellular Unveils Europe’s Largest Contract Pilot Facility for Cultivated Meat & Seafood

CDMO Extracellular announces it has opened what it claims is Europe’s largest contract pilot plant for cultivated meat and seafood in Bristol, the UK.  The facility, established for food-grade operations, will provide essential scale-up and manufacturing services to assist cultivated meat companies in achieving their production goals and mitigating the expense and time associated with building new sites. According to Extracellular, its pilot plant currently has an operational capacity of 200 L and is expected to reach 2,000 L by December 2023. It can produce up to 50t of cultivated meat annually; however, the facility is expected to reach 100t per year. The facility will hold multiple bioreactors from 50 L to 5,000 L and has a planned capacity to hold 10,000 liters. Great consumer products at achievable …

UK: Extracellular Launches Licence-Free Cell Banks to Support Cultivated Meat Research

UK CDMO Extracellular announces the launch of new low-cost cell banks — free from licensing or commercial restrictions — intended for early-stage cultivated meat companies and researchers. The cell banks offer high-quality cow, pig, and sheep primary cells isolated from fat, muscle, and bone marrow tissues. They were developed through a collaborative project with the British biotechnology company Multus. Backed by the Good Food Institute and New Harvest, the cell bank project received InnovateUK funds to advance cultivated meat research. Last April, the UK government announced a £12 million investment into a new initiative to advance cultivated meat (called CARMA) to help the country lead the world in delivering secure food supplies. Cell banks without restrictions Will Milligan, co-founder and CEO of Extracellular, said: “Primary cells are the …

Extracellular Secures New Investment to Boost Biomanufacturing of Cultivated Meat

Extracellular, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for the cultivated meat industry based in the UK, announces it has secured new funding from various investors, bringing its total of raised funds to over $1.9 million. The CDMO will use the capital to meet its goal as a global leader and development partner for biomanufacturing cultivated meat at scale. The company already operates 200L bioreactors at its research labs at Science Creates in Bristol, announcing plans to expand its capacity by installing bioreactors larger than 1,000L. Vegan impact investor Alex Payne said: “In the race to get cellular agriculture products on grocery store shelves, Extracellular has identified a crucial need for scalable, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing processes. I expect that their expertise will be a key differentiator …

UK’s Extracellular: The Challenge of Upscaling Cultivated Meat

How does a cultivated meat startup scale from producing prototypes to developing commercially viable products? The emerging cultivated meat industry faces significant challenges in bringing cost-effective products to the market. Most manufacturing processes have been adapted for the biomedical sector, which produces much lower volumes of outputs than the food industry will need to bring products to market. Supported by Science Creates and based in Bristol, Extracellular was founded in 2022 by Will Milligan, CEO and Kiren Baines, CSO, as the first dedicated contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for the cultivated meat industry.  In October of 2022, Extracellular secured investment from Big Ideas Ventures, after being chosen as one of seventeen early-stage startups selected for pre-seed investment as part of its bi-annual new protein accelerator program. …
