Report: UK’s Biggest Supermarkets Failing to Meet Their Own Climate Commitments
A new report by Feedback Global and The Food Foundation has found that the UK’s ten largest supermarkets have, on average, made an environmental commitment every six days over the past decade. Despite this, there is little evidence that they have made sufficient progress. 600 commitments relating to climate and emissions, land use and deforestation, and sustainable and healthy diets were set by the retailers between 2014 and 2024; however, it is difficult to determine whether they have been effective. For example, emissions generated in supply chains account for 90% of supermarkets’ total emissions, and nine out of ten retailers have set goals to reduce these by 2030.
