Islamic Scholars Declare That Cultivated Meat Can Be Halal

A group of leading Islamic scholars has declared that cultivated meat can be halal, provided it meets specific production criteria. This announcement comes from GOOD Meat, a subsidiary of Eat Just, Inc., which introduced cultivated meat to US consumers after receiving full USDA approval only a few months ago. The ruling comes just a week after SuperMeat’s cultivated chicken received kosher certification from OU Kosher, one of the world’s leading kosher certification agencies. “This is a positive development for the cultivated meat industry,” said Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of OU Kosher. “It shows that cultivated meat can be produced in a way that is consistent with Jewish law.” Halal criteria established by scholars The ruling was issued by three Shariah scholars from Saudi Arabia: Sheikh …

Historic Moment as GOOD Meat & Chef José Andrés Serves Cultivated Chicken at China Chilcano Restaurant

Last night, GOOD Meat, the cultivated meat division of Eat Just, Inc., made history by selling its cell-cultivated chicken for the first time in the USA.  The cell-cultivated chicken debuted at chef José Andrés’ restaurant, China Chilcano, in Washington, DC, in a landmark dinner honoring the 100th birthday of the late Willem van Eelen — the godfather of cultivated meat. The famous chef marinated and charcoal-grilled GOOD Meat’s chicken to make a Peruvian dish, Anticuchos de Pollo, served with native potatoes and ají Amarillo chimichurri. “I am proud that GOOD Meat is launching with José Andrés, beginning a new tradition of how Americans will eat meat in the many decades ahead. I am also humbled that our company can honor Willem van Eelen’s lasting legacy …

In Historic Milestone, GOOD Meat Receives US Regulatory Approval for Cultivated Chicken

In a historic milestone, cultivated meat startup GOOD Meat, a subsidiary of Eat Just, announces it has received a No Questions letter from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as part of the agency’s pre-market review process. The decision marks the first time a cultivated meat product has received regulatory approval on multiple continents, as GOOD Meat’s cultivated chicken previously received approval in Singapore.  The move comes just months after Berkeley startup UPSIDE Foods received the FDA’s first regulatory greenlight to sell cultivated meat, poultry or seafood.  According to the Good Food Institute (GFI), the GOOD Meat decision marks only the second time cultivated meat has received US regulatory approval, and signals a major food system transformation.   “Today’s news is more than just another …

The Companies Removing Fetal Bovine Serum to Make Ethical, Slaughter-Free Meat

Last week, GOOD Meat received the first-in-the-world regulatory approval to use fetal bovine serum-free media in its cultivated poultry production process. With this significant milestone in the history of cultivated meat, we discuss the companies paving the way for ethical, slaughter-free meat. Removing fetal bovine serum (FBS) from cultivated meat production has been among the industry’s major challenges. FBS has been the default growth supplement for in vitro cell culture used by academic and industrial researchers and scientists, including in the cellular agriculture space. Ethically problematic Fetal bovine serum is made by harvesting the blood of bovine fetuses taken from pregnant cows during slaughter. Blood from the fetus is drawn out via a closed collection system and then transformed into a serum. FBS contains growth factors, hormones, …

“Regulatory Milestone” as GOOD Meat Receives Approval for Serum-Free Cell Growth Media

GOOD Meat, Eat Just’s cultivated meat division, has become the first producer worldwide to receive regulatory approval for the use of serum-free cell growth media in cultivated products. To date, most cultivated meat producers have used fetal bovine serum to grow their cells. However, the serum is expensive, of inconsistent quality, and comes with ethical issues. GOOD Meat believes that the use of serum-free media will make cultivated meat production more scalable, efficient, and sustainable, along with reducing costs. Regulatory approval has been granted by the Singapore Food Agency, which previously made history when it approved GOOD Meat’s cultivated chicken nuggets for sale in late 2020. A year later, cultivated chicken breasts were also approved. For the time being, GOOD Meat remains the only brand …

Analysis by the FAIRR Initiative shows that 2021 is “the year of cultivated meat,” with $506 million invested so far this year into cultivated meat firms, already far surpassing previous years.  The report has also found consumer demand for alt protein products in North America is exploding, with 39% of US households now buying plant-based milk and plant-based food sales rising to nearly twice as much as overall US retail food sales last year. FAIRR’s research shows how cultivated meat – a genuine slaughter-free animal protein source – experienced a sixfold increase of investment to reach $366 million in 2020, but that total has already been exceeded in 2021, which so far has seen investment of $506 million into cultivated meat firms.  Eat Just’s GOOD …

Scientists from Osaka University claim to have created the world’s first 3D-printed wagyu beef in Japan this week, using bovine satellite cells and adipose-derived stem cells isolated from Wagyu cows to 3D-print a realistic steak piece containing muscle, fat, and blood vessels. Wagyu can be translated literally to “Japanese cow,” and is famous around the globe for its high content of intramuscular fat. Known as marbling or Sashi, this fat provides the beef with its distinctive flavors and texture.
