Better Meat Co. Partners with Greenleaf Foods to Develop New Products with Rhiza Mycoprotein

Fermentation specialist The Better Meat Co. announces it has entered a joint development agreement with Greenleaf Foods, SPC, a subsidiary of Canadian meat giant Maple Leaf Foods. According to Better Meat, the agreement will focus largely on product development. Through the partnership, both companies will work together to explore the next generation of alt protein using Better Meat’s novel Rhiza mycoprotein ingredient.  Produced via fermentation, Rhiza mycoprotein is a sustainable, whole-food ingredient derived from the Neorospora crassa fungus, a species long used in parts of Asia to ferment soybeans for tempeh.  According to Better Meat, Rhiza has a naturally meaty texture, with more protein than eggs and more iron than beef. Portillo’s, a fast-casual chain known for its Chicago-style hot dogs, announces it has joined with plant-based brand Field Roast to launch its first meatless item, The Garden Dog. The new offering is now available at all 71 Portillo’s locations in the US.  Made with Field Roast’s Signature Stadium Dog, the Garden Dog is custom-made for Portillo’s and features classic toppings such as mustard, relish, chopped onions, tomatoes, celery salt, a pickle spear, and sport peppers on a steamed poppy seed bun.  Already available at retail, Field Roast’s Stadium Dog recreates the flavors of premium, kosher-style hot dogs by double smoking over maple hardwood with both steam and dry heat. Field Roast Brings Plant-Based Nuggets to Costco as “Chicken Wars” Continue

Plant-based producer Field Roast has partnered with Costco to launch a 24-ounce club pack of plant-based chicken nuggets. The Field Roast Plant-Based Nuggets will now be available at over 50 Costco locations in the LA metropolitan area and is the first time that the product will be sold at any Costco store in the US. As part of Field Roast’s growing frozen portfolio, the Plant-Based Nuggets were first introduced to conventional retailers in January 2020 and have proven highly successful, selling nearly 1.75 million plant-based nuggets in the last 12 months. Maple Leaf Completes Purchase of $100M Indianapolis Lightlife Facility

Meat giant Maple Leaf Foods has announced that its plant-based subsidiary, Greenleaf Foods, has completed its previously announced purchase of a 118,000 square foot plant in Indianapolis where it will be installing new equipment to increase tempeh production capacity for the Lightlife brand.  Initial production at the plant is targeted to begin in the first half of 2022, and when fully operational, it will employ approximately 115 people. Michael McCain, President and CEO, said at the time of the initial announcement: “At this juncture, given the high demand for our tempeh products, this Project offers us the ability to deliver incremental capacity in a cost-effective, timely manner in a location that has synergies with our long-term vision.”

Meat giant Maple Leaf‘s plant protein division, Greenleaf Foods, introduces its newest product, the plant-based Field Roast Signature Stadium Dog, to the American market. According to the company, this is the first plant-based hot dog in North America that is made from pure pea protein and not soy.
