Hooked Launches Plant-Based Seafood Range at Hundreds of German Stores

Swedish plant-based seafood brand Hooked has expanded beyond the Nordic countries for the first time, announcing a launch at hundreds of REWE West stores in Germany. The expansion has been made possible by a partnership with leading sales agent Ooha, which will allow Hooked to launch at anywhere between 250 and 500 REWE stores. The product range will include plant-based salmon, tuna, and seafood spreads, all made using high-moisture extrusion technology. The launch comes as Germany increasingly gains a reputation as Europe’s biggest plant-based market; data published earlier this year revealed that the country’s meat consumption is at a record low, while consumption of plant-based foods is at a record high. “A growing demand” Hooked raised the capital to fuel the expansion in June, through …

Hooked Foods Grows by 25% Month Over Month, is Inundated With Positive Reviews

After launching its plant-based salmon alternative “Salmoonish” at Swedish retail stores, alt seafood brand Hooked says it has been inundated with positive consumer feedback. One customer who has been vegan for seven years said they “cried tears of joy” at the taste, describing it as identical to conventional salmon. Another said that Salmoonish “tastes and smells like salmon in a scary way”, while a third said the product “would probably fool anyone”. “I am extra proud to show this to whomever in the world who is doubting plant-based seafood will have a place on our future retail shelves,” said Monika Werthén, CMO of Hooked. “There is a clear market and consumer demand out there asking for these products. I hope these consumer testimonials together with …

Sweden Invests in Homegrown Foods to Improve Self-Sufficiency and Deal with Vegan Demand

As demand for plant-based foods grows in Sweden, the government has invested €2.5 million into local projects to boost the agricultural potential of the country. Focusing on crops like fava beans, the initiative aims to increase the national plant-based sector’s competitiveness and make plant-based diets more sustainable. With the majority of plant-based products consumed in Sweden made from imported soy, Vinnova – Sweden’s Innovation Agency – is funding 17 agricultural projects which will improve the self-sufficiency of the county and meet the needs of a population consuming more and more plant-based products. Despite being a country with harsh conditions for agriculture, the innovations could lead to increased growth in the sector and less reliance on – often unsustainable – soy production. One such project is …
