Meatable Slashes Production Time for Cultivated Pork: Cell to Sausage in Four Days

Cultivated pork producer Meatable announces a new production milestone: from cell to sausage in “only four days”. This new record surpasses the company’s previous eight-day process, making it the quickest cell-cultivating method in the world, the company claims. “This process is 60 times faster than traditional pig farming and involves nothing more than pulling a single cell once from a pig without causing harm,” says the Dutch startup. A record-speed platform To turn cells into a product more quickly than other methods of cultivating meat, Meatable has developed a cost-effective platform using pluripotent stem cells (known for their self-renewal capacity and fast proliferation) and a technology called opti-ox™ developed by co-founder Dr. Mark Kotter.   This platform replicates the natural growth of cells, allowing them to differentiate …

Netherlands: Meatable Opens Larger Pilot Facility Ahead of 2024 Cultivated Pork Launch

Dutch biotech company Meatable yesterday inaugurated a new pilot facility at the Bio Science Park in Leiden, the Netherlands, to expand the production capacity of its cultivated pork platform. The new pilot facility follows a successful $35 million Series B round this summer, which brought the company’s raised capital for cultivated pork to $95 million. According to Meatable, the new 3300m2 facility is twice the size of its previous office and lab space. It has a bioreactor capacity of 200 L (500 L in the future), allowing the company to expand its production from the previous 50 L. The company states that this expansion is an important milestone in producing and testing larger quantities of cultivated pork products as it prepares for a commercial launch in …

The Netherlands Makes History as First European Country to Allow Cultivated Meat and Seafood Tastings

The Netherlands has become the first European country to allow cultivated meat and seafood tastings, even before an EU novel food approval. Today the Dutch government announced that the much-awaited tastings will soon take place under limited conditions. Although the first piece of cultivated meat was developed in the Netherlands, until now, it was illegal for anyone — even scientists — to taste it. But after this historic agreement, investors, partners, consumers, and scientists will soon taste Mosa Meat’s beef burgers, Meatable‘s cultivated pork, and future developments. Krijn de Nood, CEO at Meatable, comments: “This is great news for the Netherlands. We know cultivated meat can significantly help reduce climate impact. By enabling the tasting of cultivated meat, The Netherlands maintains its pioneering role in Europe and …

Meatable Jointly Secures €1M for Cultivated Meat Scaffolding R&D

A Dutch consortium of businesses and academia, including cultivated meat pioneer Meatable, DSM, VIVOLTA, and TU Delft, has been awarded the Open Technology Programme by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).   The programme will grant the consortium €1 million to fund a five-year research project using protein-based biopolymers such as elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) for food and healthcare applications, including soft tissue repair. According to Meatable, ELPs have the potential to create the scaffolds necessary for developing cultivated meat products, including whole cuts.  Creating synthetic biopolymer prototypes TU Delft’s professors, Dr. Gijsje Koenderink and Dr. Jean-Marc Daran, will lead the research project to study the scalability and cost-effectiveness of ELPs and non-animal-derived collagen.  Participants companies DSM and VIVOLTA will add their “world-class biotechnology competence,” which is critical …
