The Ten Winners of the Carrefour Plant-Based Contest!

Carrefour announced the final of its Plant-Based Contest last night, deciding between the 15 finalists. The aim of this contest was to find the most successful plant-based innovations that the retail giant will then offer to its customers. More than 250 start-ups from all over the world took part, of which 15 were selected for the final and 10 winners were chosen by the jury. Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard was present at the results announcement ceremony to hand out the jury’s “Coup de Coeur” award to La Vie for its ham — a new product due to be launched in September. Alt Seafood Producer Novish to Make US Debut at Natural Products Expo East

Top-selling European plant-based seafood company Novish announces it will be making its US debut this month at Natural Products Expo East. The event takes place this  September 23-25. The Netherlands brand this spring expanded into seafood restaurant chain NORDSEE which operates throughout Europe, and last May announced a deal with Misty Mountain Trade & Consulting Inc. for distribution of its vegan fish burgers and sticks across Canada. Novish’s product portfolio includes fishless sticks, bites, burgers, chunks, fillets and tuna. Plant-Based is “Tricking the Public” According to Brazilian Fish Boss, As Big Seafood Hits Panic Button

Big players in the conventional seafood industry are sounding increasingly worried by the inexorable rise of plant-based seafood alternatives, with one executive recently stating: “Who wants to eat tomatoes should eat tomatoes, who wants to eat tofu should eat tofu, who wants to eat soy should eat soy?” Eduardo Lobo, president of Brazilian seafood processors association ABIPESCA and a partner in Prime Seafood, continued, as quoted by Intra Fish: “You can’t call something by a name that it isn’t. “This doesn’t exist…it’s tricking the public.” Lobo was referring to Spanish brand Tunato, a plant-based tuna made from tomatoes produced by Mimic Seafood. Quick Service Seafood Chain NORDSEE Launches Plant-Based Fish Made by Novish

NORDSEE is a fast food chain specialising in seafood based in Germany and Austria with locations throughout Europe. Following the news as we reported last month that vegan seafood producer Novish closed a funding round including Kharis Capital, the owner of NORDSEE; the chain has now launched two menu items by the fast-growing Dutch producer. From now, a baked fish baguette and fish & chips dish are available at NORDSEE locations in Germany as a trial basis before expanded rollout. Its additional locations are in the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, Hungary, Cyprus, Dubai, Egypt, Bulgaria, Turkey and Russia.
