A Third of Irish Consumers Are Buying More Plant-Based Products, Oatly Study Suggests

A survey conducted by Opinions Research on behalf of Oatly has found that a third of Irish consumers are buying more meat and dairy alternatives than they were three years ago. 25% of these consumers said they were motivated by concern about climate change (though only 13% were aware that the food system generates a third of global emissions). Another 25% were cutting back to improve their health, and 30% of the 1000 respondents said they would buy even more plant-based products in 2023. Plant-based foods were most popular among consumers under 50, with 42% of 18-24-year-olds and 48% of 25-34-year-olds likely to consider swapping animal products for a vegan alternative. On the other hand, those over 65 were reluctant to make the change, with …

Oatly Barista to Roll Out at Coffee Machines in 390 Swedish Convenience Stores

Swedish consumers will soon be able to enjoy coffee made with Oatly Barista at almost 400 convenience stores across the country. Thanks to an expanded partnership with Reitan, one of the region’s leading retail companies, the oat milk will roll out at coffee machines in around 300 Pressbyrån stores and 90 7-Eleven locations. Oatly and Reitan have been collaborating since 2011, when the latter’s convenience stores began stocking Oatly products on their shelves. Around ten million coffees are sold each year at Reitan-operated locations, so the partnership has huge potential for Oatly. It will be promoted via the Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven apps, along with in-store digital screens and social media. “An important step” Sweden is known for its progressiveness when it comes to plant-based foods, …

Oatly Commissions Study on Performance of Footballers on Plant-Based Diet

A study commissioned by Oatly has concluded that footballers perform equally well on plant-based and conventional diets. The research was carried out by the outpatient clinic of the University of Potsdam, the Institute for Nutritional Medicine of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, and the Research Institute for Plant-Based Nutrition (IFPE) in Biebertal. Oatly had no influence on the implementation of the study. 18 footballers from German regional league team SV Babelsberg 03 took part in the research, with some adopting a plant-based diet and others continuing with their ordinary eating habits. The players’ athletic performance was assessed before and after the eight-week trial, with no changes found. However, researchers emphasise that further studies are needed to confirm the results. Footballers who adopted a plant-based diet also …

The Vegan Society and ProVeg Call for Plant-Based Milks For Children on World School Milk Day

To coincide with yesterday’s World School Milk Day, The Vegan Society and ProVeg International are pushing for plant-based milk to be offered to children in schools. World School Milk Day, which was established 22 years ago, is customarily associated with dairy milk, but given that 68% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant and that many people have a cow’s milk allergy, it should come as no surprise that more and more nations are promoting plant-based milk as a dairy substitute. “Plant-based milk offers those with intolerance or dairy milk allergies a much greater choice at school mealtimes and there is a growing array of nutritious plant-based milk to choose from. These milk also offer greater choice to young people who want animal-friendly drinks as …

Oatly: “It is Absolutely Achievable for the UK to Significantly Reduce its Consumption of Animal Products”

Shaunagh Duncan, Head of Sustainability at Oatly UK and Marisa Heath, Chief Executive, Plant-Based Food Alliance UK, spent some time discussing their insights into sustainability, the UK’s food strategy, the school milk campaign, and driving the systemic shift towards plant-based in order to avoid climate disaster. What is your opinion on the recent UK government’s food strategy? Shaunagh Duncan: It is incredibly disappointing that the Government’s food strategy lacked any mention of plant-based products and made no recommendations around the reduction of dairy and meat consumption. We had hoped to hear new plans for all school children to be given access to a vegan school meal option, but this was also not included.  Food production is responsible for a third of global GHG emissions – …

Oatly Ads Banned After British Advertising Watchdog Calls Them “Misleading”

Oatly ads banned after UK Advertising Standards Agency upholds complaints made by the public and campaign group A Greener World. The British Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has ruled that four environmental claims made by Oatly in past advertisements were “misleading”. Complaints were made about some of the company’s newspaper, social media, and television ads. In one instance, Oatly claimed that “climate experts say cutting dairy and meat products from our diets is the single biggest lifestyle change we can make to reduce our environmental impact”. However, the ASA ruled that this misled consumers into thinking there was a consensus among experts, when in reality the claim was based on the opinion of a single researcher. Following the ruling, Oatly has been ordered not to repeat …
