PETA Warns US Meat Companies to Learn from Mistakes of Tobacco Farmers and “Get Out Now!”

PETA is urging five major US meat companies—Hormel Foods, Cargill, Smithfield Foods, Tyson Foods, and Oscar Mayer—to shift their focus from animal-based products to vegan alternatives, following the example set by one of Italy’s oldest meat producers, Gruppo Tonazzo. Gruppo Tonazzo recently announced that it will stop selling meat entirely and concentrate solely on plant-based products. Albino Tonazzo, CEO of the company’s plant-based brand Kioene, explained that the shift is motivated by a “deep responsibility to future generations” and a commitment to environmental preservation. In letters sent to the CEOs of the US companies, PETA noted the growing consumer demand for plant-based foods and the environmental and ethical concerns associated with animal agriculture. The Kraft Heinz Not Company’s First Plant-Based Meat Launch: Oscar Mayer NotHotDogs and NotSausages

The Kraft Heinz Not Company LLC today announces the launch of NotHotDogs and NotSausages. Somewhat surprisingly, the launch is an Oscar Mayer collaboration and marks the first plant-based offering from Oscar Mayer, also a Kraft Heinz subsidiary, famous in the US for its processed meat products such as hot dogs, bologna, bacon and cold cuts, as well as Lunchables products. Having already launched animal-free cheese slices and mayonnaise products in late 2022, this marks the first meat alternative product arising from the joint venture between Chile’s NotCo and Kraft Heinz. The varieties NotHotDogs and NotSausages in Bratwurst and Italian sausage are set to roll out into major retailers in the US later this year after debuting at Expo West.
