Swiss Biotech Planetary and Japan’s Konica Minolta Partner to Cut Costs of Fermented Proteins

Swiss firm planetary SA (Planetary), the world’s first integrated biomass and precision fermentation CDMO, has partnered with the Japanese giant in imaging technology, Konica Minolta Inc. to optimize and reduce the production costs of its fermentation technologies. The ultimate aim is to accelerate the production of fermented proteins, including dairy, egg, fats, and mycoproteins, that can compete with the prices of similar commodity products in the market. The newly announced collaboration, following the signing of an MoU, involves using Konica Minolta’s advanced image-sensing tech and data-driven bioprocess to develop and implement new real-time monitoring and control operations. In addition, by leveraging the collected data and AI, the technologies can be further optimized. As a result, the companies expect to decrease the number of lost batches and achieve a further reduction …

World First Integrated Precision and Mycelium Fermentation Protein Plant Coming to Switzerland

Fermentation manufacturing platform planetary SA has hired Glatt and IE Group to engineer what is claimed to be the world’s first integrated precision and mycelium fermentation plant. Based in Switzerland, the facility will be able to produce fermented proteins, lipids, and other compounds at scale, along with mycelium biomass. Planetary raised $8 million to build the facility earlier this year, with the intention of removing bottlenecks in the fermentation industry caused by a lack of bioprocessing capacity. This should help to reduce costs. Integrated process solutions firm Glatt will plan the process and safety technology systems for the facility, while IE Group — an industrial construction specialist — will design the building and infrastructure. The engineering process will have a focus on sustainability and resource …

Planetary Raises $8M to “De-Bottleneck the Food Fermentation Industry”

Swiss food tech company planetary has raised $8 million in a seed funding round, to construct production-scale capacity for the food fermentation industry. The round was led by impact investor Astanor Ventures, with participation from XAnge, Blue Horizon, Nucleus Capital, and more. As a contract development and manufacturing partner (CDMO), planetary will use the funding to increase production capacity for both microbial precision and mycelial biomass fermentation players. Switzerland base to offer solution While demand for fermented products is rapidly growing, the bioprocessing capacity to meet this demand currently does not exist, according to the company. Planetary‘s intention is to “de-bottleneck” the industry, ultimately operating a global network of automated production plants. This will begin with the construction of the company’s flagship plant in Switzerland. …
