Canada: New $7.7M Consortium to Develop Pea and Fava Protein Meat Alternatives

Protein Industries Canada has announced a new project to advance the development of pea and fava protein ingredients and food products. The consortium, including Lovingly Made Flour Mills, TMRW Foods, and Dutton Farms, will focus on optimizing ingredient processing and developing new meat alternative products. A total of $7.7 million has been committed to the project, with Protein Industries Canada investing $3.3 million. The project aims to add value to Canadian pea and fava crops, creating a value-chain feedback loop that benefits ingredient processors, food manufacturers, and consumers. This effort is expected to improve the affordability, nutrition, and consistency of end products, strengthening the domestic ingredient manufacturing industry and capturing new economic opportunities for Canada. TMRW Foods to Launch in 100’s of Canadian Walmart and Loblaws Stores

Plant-based company TMRW Foods announces the company will soon debut in Walmart and Loblaws, two of Canada’s largest retail grocery chains.  The brand’s plant-based meats will arrive in 552 Loblaws and 232 Walmart locations beginning in March and April 2022, respectively. The brand says the launch will help it gain over 1,900  incremental distribution points, and create a total retail footprint of more than 1,000 Canadian stores. Based in British Columbia, TMRW sells a full range of non-GMO, soy-free plant-based meats including burgers, sausages, grounds and protein shreds.  Through the partnership, Walmart will carry the brand’s TMRW Lightly Seasoned Protein Shreds, Buffalo Protein Shreds, and BBQ Protein Shreds. Canada’s TMRW Foods Raises $2.6M For US Expansion With High Profile Investors From Daiya and Disney

Vancouver-based TMRW Foods announced this week a seed round investment of $2.6 million from investors including Greg Blake, Co-founder of Daiya, and Richard Cooperstein, CEO & Senior Managing Partner of Media Investment Group, former Senior Executive at Disney‘s Worldwide Television Group, Paramount Pictures & Facebook.   Other investors in the seed round included Eric Patel, Director at Fresh Prep, former Director at Smart Sweets, former Board Chairman at Daiya, and the Milne Group, owners of Virtuous Pie, Mila and Harken Coffee.
