Natalie Portman Joins Tender Food’s $12M Seed Round for Plant-Based Meats “Indistinguishable” From Real Thing

Tender Food, a food tech startup based in Boston, has raised $12 million in a seed round featuring actress and animal rights activist Natalie Portman amongst other VC’s, for uniquely textured plant meats. Founded by Harvard engineers, Tender Food uses novel tech to spin plant-based fibers into alt meat, creating whole muscle cut products like chicken breasts, pulled pork, and steaks, and plans to launch its first products later this year.  “Our ambition is to make products that are indistinguishable from butchered meat” Claiming that its novel plant-based fiber spinning tech – similar to making cotton candy – gives its alt meat analogs a more similar texture to animal meat, Tender Food will use the new funding to scale production for its coming products lines. …

Unovis Asset Management Closes Oversubscribed €146M Fund

Alt-protein-focused venture capital firm Unovis Asset Management has closed an oversubscribed €146 million ($166 million) second fund. Participants included Fuji Oil, Credit Suisse, and Invest-NL. Known simply as Fund II, the fund is over  times as large as Unovis’ previous $45 million fund New Crop Capital Trust. Some of the companies this capital was deployed to, such as Beyond Meat and Oatly, are no longer part of Unovis’ portfolio following their IPOs. So far, Unovis Asset Management has invested in 63 companies, with an average deal size of $14.95 million. Wicked Kitchen Targets US Market After $14M Investment

After “unprecedented” success in the UK market through its partnership with supermarket giant Tesco, Wicked Kitchen is set to expand into the US following a $14 million Series A funding round. The famous American chef and brother team, Derek and Chad Sarno, founded the plant-based food brand in January 2018 and are now bringing the Wicked Kitchen product line home to the US, where one in every two people consume more plant-based meals than meat. The investment round was co-led by pioneering plant-based foods venture fund Unovis Asset Management and Thailand-based NRF Nove Foods.  When Tesco first launched the Wicked Kitchen range, it was an immediate success, with initial sales exceeding sales forecasts. Green Butcher: Indonesia’s First Plant-Based Meat Producer Finalises Seed Round Investment  

Leading alternative protein venture capital firm Unovis Asset Management has announced the closing of its investment in Indonesia-based startup, Green Butcher. Located in Jakarta, the company claims to be the first plant-based meat producer in the Southeast Asian country, developing chicken and beef alternatives using natural, whole-food ingredients.
