New York City Hospitals Make Plant-Based Meals the Default Option

The Better Food Foundation has partnered with New York City Health + Hospitals and the Mayor’s Office to make plant-based meals the default at all 11 NYC hospitals. While meat-based options remain available, the two daily Chef’s Specials are now always plant-based. So far, the program has been hugely successful, with over half of patients opting for the plant-based dishes and 95% saying they were satisfied with their choice. Initially, the plant-based meals were only offered at lunchtimes, but they have proved so popular that the scheme will be extended to dinner. The Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award, which honors the late plant-based business pioneer Greg Steltenpohl, is officially accepting entries for its first annual $100,000 grant for early-stage food ventures. Herblabism Becomes Member of Plant-Based Food Alliance UK

British alt meat startup Herblabism announces it is joining the Plant-based Food Alliance UK (PFA UK) as a full member.  Herblabism is a B2B meat-free company that supplies its products to major sporting, entertainment, and conference venues. As reported by vegconomist, the startup recently signed a deal with Levy UK+I, a caterer for sports stadiums such as Wembley, Aston Villa, and Chelsea F.C., as well as entertainment venues including the O2 Arena. At the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, Levy UK+I served Herblabism’s mushroom burgers and plant-based sausages. The startup says it plans to launch its products on its website for consumers to buy DTC. Biden Administration Reveals Proposal to Expand Plant-Based Options at Federal Facilities

President Biden’s administration has announced a new proposal that pledges to increase the availability of plant-based and vegetarian options at federal facilities.  The “National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health” plan would, in part, provide greater access to plant-based options at federal dining facilities such as prisons, parks, hospitals, museums and government buildings. Over 30 members of Congress, chefs, and a large coalition of organizations focused on food, farming, animal welfare and the environment supported the measure. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which backed the proposal, fewer than half of federal facilities it surveyed regularly offer a plant-based or vegetarian entree option.
