Greg Steltenpohl Visionary Award Now Accepting Entries for $100,000 Early-Stage Venture Grant

The Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award, which honors the late plant-based business pioneer Greg Steltenpohl, is officially accepting entries for its first annual $100,000 grant for early-stage food ventures. Each year, the grant will be awarded to plant-centric entrepreneurs to enable or expand the accomplishments, reach and impact of their work. Any innovations related to the food system from “soil to soul” are eligible for the grant. Early-stage food initiatives will be judged according to the merit of its team and strategy, as well as the embodiment of the four core principles Greg championed: systems entrepreneurship, pragmatic vision, ethical leadership, and creative transformation. The Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award has been set up to honour plant-based visionary Greg Steltenpohl of Califia Farms and his lifelong mission. Friends and family of natural products pioneer and plant-based visionary Greg Steltenpohl announce the launch of a $100,000 annual scholarship for food startups. The founder of Odwalla and Califia Farms, who passed away in March 2021, dedicated his life to transforming the food system through entrepreneurship. Alt Dairy Expected to TRIPLE in Value to $32BN, Thanks To Cheese and China?

A new market study reveals that the plant-based dairy market is predicted to expand by nearly 3X over the next ten years from $11 bn to an estimated $32 bn. China is identified as a key market which is described as “flourishing” and cheese is identified as the next frontier in terms of innovation. “Cheese alternatives are predicted to be the “next frontier” in plant-based innovation, advancements in ingredient technology are estimated to fire dairy-alternatives market”  The report finds that plant-based dairy reached a valuation of $11bn in 2020, when plant-based milk expanded twice as fast as cow’s milk. In Memory: Greg Steltenpohl, Founder & CEO of Califia Farms, 1954-2021

Greg Steltenpohl, founder and CEO of hugely successful US plant milk brand Califia Farms, sadly passed away this weekend at the age of 67. The company produces, among other things, plant-based drinks, plant-based yogurts and cooking creams, which are much loved by US consumers as well as in the Chinese market. Greg originally founded Califia Farms as a co-op and it went on to become one of the most successful and creative plant-based milk brands on the market, receiving $225 million in investments in early 2020.

Califia Farms’ Plant Butters Now Available Across the USA as Demand Soars

Califia Farms, the US pioneer in plant-based dairy alternatives, has announced that its plant butters, launched in May, are now available nationally in the States. The company states that this is in response to demand for plant-based butter, a category worth $198 million with sales growing 8% in the past year and 15% over the past two years.
