Plantbased Business Minute: Top Headlines for the Week Ending September 27, 2020.

Every week, Plant-based Business Expert Elysabeth Alfano breaks down the headlines with her review and analysis.  Here is the rundown from her video (which you can watch below) for the week ending September 27, 2020.

Let’s get into it!

Kentucky Fried Cellular

Oh, Kentucky Fried Chicken how I kind of love you again. Kentucky Fried Chicken is bringing Beyond Meat chicken nuggets to southern California. We might have known this already, they tested it a while back. Congratulations, it’s now going full force in southern California.

What’s even better is that Kentucky Fried Chicken has committed to Kentucky Fried cellular. That’s right.  KFC is the first company and restaurant chain that has globally committed to a cellular product, in this case it is chicken nuggets. They’re going to test it in Russia.  No date was given as to when, but once tested, it will go worldwide.

My business bottom line: Kentucky Fried Chicken is, of course, going to get a boost for their company. It’s going to revitalize their brand as they show themselves as leaders for the future of food. There is a lot of equity to being first.

To quote Executive Director of the Good Food Institute, Bruce Friedrich, “Fire up the fryer.”  I couldn’t agree more.

Starry-Eyed for Miyoko’s Creamed Cheese

Starbucks, the international coffee chain, has dedicated itself to sustainability initiatives, great! They are now bringing on Miyoko’s cream cheese, great!   Miyoko’s Creamery is known for its plant-based cheeses which are delicious, and cashew-based.  The company is going to be supplying at least one outlet of Starbucks right outside the headquarters of Seattle with an Everything cream cheese flavor and a Cinnamon Raisin flavor.

I commend Starbucks, of course.  They are going to get a boost to their bottom line when they bring on more plant-based items. I can’t wait to have Miyoko’s cream cheese at Starbucks.  However, I challenge Starbucks here and say ‘get with the program’ because there are vegan muffins, vegan scones, vegan croissants. There are so many vegan lunch options that could be at Starbucks that aren’t already there.  There is commercial vegan butter for baking from companies like ForA Butter and, of course, Miyoko’s and Califia.  They all have plant-based butters. There are so many baked goods that could already be in Starbucks.

My business bottom line is: I say ‘hats off’ to you Starbucks for bringing in Miyoko’s cream cheese.  However, I encourage you to do more and to do it faster for the real payoff.

Green Monday Rides High at #32

Congratulations to David Yeung and his team at Green Monday. The work they do is so incredibly important. Fortune magazine has named them #32 on their list of “Changing the World” companies.  David and Green Monday are indeed doing just that.

Green Monday is the largest distributor in Asia of all plant-based items and, in addition, Green Monday is the creator of Omni Pork, a plant-based pork intending to address China’s consumption of pork. Let’s call it what it is: pigs.  China consumes 50% of pigs, pork on the market.  The rest of the world is equally culpable, consuming the other 50% and causing enormous health issues, enormous animal welfare issues, of course, and enormous environmental issues.

Well done David Yeung and Green Monday for their work with Omni Pork and for taking head-on these critical issues.  Their work is not only inspirational, it is indeed life-affirming.
