During the same week that Loma Linda debut their vegan tuna alternative TUNO to the UK, Whole Foods Market and Thrive Market in the US are now launching three new 100% plant-based tunas from Good Catch Foods. They will be the first retailers to carry these shelf-stable products.
Good Catch is aiming to impact on the enormous global appetite for sea food, as nearly 90% of the world’s marine fish stock is now overexploited or depleted. The Good Catch chefs have created their product using a six-plant protein blend of pea protein isolate, soy protein isolate, chickpea flour, lentil protein, faba protein and navy bean flour. One serving size contains 90 calories, 14 grams of protein, and zero grams of saturated fat, which is close to the original canned tuna.
However, when compared to real fish, plant-based tuna avoids the high mercury levels, PCBs, dioxins and other contaminants, and also avoids the diseases and other problems presented by factory fish farming and aquaculture. The new products contain algal oil for flavour and to provide a plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids. These ingredients produce a product that has maximum seafood taste, texture, and nutrition with minimal impact on the planet and fragile ocean ecosystems.
The ready-to-eat products deliver the flavour and flaky texture of albacore tuna but without the fishy smell. They are available in three varieties, in 3.3-ounce pouches: Naked in Water, Mediterranean and Oil & Herbs. This week, USA today have reported that 83 % of Americans in 2018 are adding more plant-based foods to their diets, so this is clearly a growing market ready for new products such as this which actively address sustainability issues.
