BettaF!sh Unveils SAL-NOM Vegan Hot-Smoked Salmon Made from Seaweed

Berlin-based startup BettaF!sh presents its latest product, SAL-NOM, a plant-based alternative to hot-smoked salmon made from seaweed, following the success of its flagship product TU-NAH.

With the new product launch, the company is expanding its product portfolio to include one of the world’s favourite fish species and once again demonstrating the innovative use of European seaweed. Seaweed is often referred to as a ‘good impact food’, providing important nutrients and helping the ecosystem to regain its balance without the need for resources such as arable land, freshwater, fertilisers or pesticides.

According to BettaF!sh, recently named as one of the Top 10 Agrifood Startups to watch in 2024, TU-NAH was the biggest launch in the European fish alternatives market in October 2021. The product has been included in sandwiches, two pizza and pasta dishes at international restaurant chain L’Osteria, a TU-NAH pizza in ALDI Switzerland, and in a sandwich wrap served aboard Japan Airlines.

Not just a product

The new product is made from European organic seaweed, field bean and pea proteins, without the use of soya or wheat, and provides a rich source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids and fibre.

“SAL-NOM is not just a product; it shows our dedication to innovation, sustainability and enjoyment,” says Deniz Ficicioglu, CEO of BettaF!sh. “By utilising the natural benefits of seaweed, we are offering a fish alternative that is not only delicious, but also contributes significantly to the protection of our oceans and our personal health.”

“We worked on our product for a long time until SAL-NOM was convincing in terms of both flavour and nutritional value,” explains Leonie Wagner, food technologist and product developer at BettaF!sh. “The initial feedback from test eaters has exceeded our expectations!”

The international organisation Veganuary is also campaigning for climate and animal-friendly alternatives and is organising #VeganuaryFishWeek around World Oceans Day. As part of the campaign, BettaF!sh is joining forces with Veganuary to set an example for healthier oceans and the well-being of our sea creatures.
