New Swiss Plant-Based Brand Yellow Sunshine Introduces Fermented Lupin Protein

Alice Fauconnet and Freddy Hunziker, known for their work as co-founders of New Roots, have launched a new plant-based brand called Yellow Sunshine. The brand focuses on fermented lupin protein, a functional ingredient designed to meet both personal health needs and environmental sustainability goals.

“We’re not just offering an alternative; we’re building a future-forward protein”

Yellow Sunshine’s products are built around lupin, a legume with a high protein content that has been underutilized in the plant-based sector. The company uses cutting-edge fermentation techniques to enhance the nutritional profile of lupin while maintaining a commitment to regenerative farming practices in Switzerland and Germany.

According to Fauconnet, the new brand represents a next generation of plant-based foods, offering nutrient-dense options that are functional and appealing in taste. “We’re not just offering an alternative; we’re building a future-forward protein that supports health, delivers complete nutrition, and tastes incredible,” she stated.

The product line features three lupin protein blocks: Plain, Garlic & Herbs, and Pepper & Paprika. These can be enjoyed either hot or cold and are designed to be versatile, fitting into a wide variety of recipes. The blocks are made using lupin grown in collaboration with farmers who practice regenerative agriculture, which ensures a short and transparent supply chain with minimal processing.

Regenerative farming with lupin

Lupin is known for its high protein content, providing 40% protein per serving along with all nine essential amino acids. It is also rich in minerals such as magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc, as well as B vitamins. As a plant-based ingredient, it is organic, fermented, and free from cholesterol, saturated fats, and lactose. Furthermore, lupin helps regenerate soil by adding nitrogen back into the ground, supporting sustainable farming practices.

Freddy Hunziker, co-founder of Yellow Sunshine, explained, “We’re proud to pioneer a new protein source while working directly with Swiss and German farmers to build an ingredient supply chain from the ground up. This is about making food that’s better—for people, for farmers, and for the soil.”

Yellow Sunshine products are available for purchase online via MrVegan and Fabulous, with select stores in Switzerland carrying the brand as well.
