Better Balance’s Gluten & Soy-Free Plant-Based Dogs Hit Gelson’s 27 Locations in LA County

Better Balance, Sigma‘s global plant-based food brand, announces the launch of its latest release — the Better Dog — at all 27 Gelson’s Markets locations across Los Angeles County, from Santa Barbara to Pacific Beach.

The Better Dog is a gluten and soy-free alternative made from pea protein. The brand claims that it has quickly become a favorite among consumers and industry experts for its superior taste and texture. The product earned various accolades after its initial launch in Spain in 2022 and its US debut in Chicago’s foodservice scene this February.

“Our launch in Gelson’s is a significant step forward”

Gelson’s will offer two SKUs: the Jumbo pack, featuring two extra-long hot dogs, and the Classic, a five-pack of traditional-sized hot dogs.

Ana Guerra, Head of US for Better Balance, shares, “As we work to make Better Balance’s delicious plant-based offerings available to everyone, our launch in Gelson’s is a significant step forward.”

Celebrating plant-based food

The California launch represents a significant expansion of the brand’s retail footprint, which began earlier this year with product listings in several Chicago grocery stores, including Pete’s Market, Cermak Fresh Market, and Tony’s Fresh Market.

Before retail, the brand mainly focused on food service, reaching over 300 venues, from restaurants and theme parks, including the Frisco RoughRiders ballpark in Texas, to stadiums and music festivals.

Better Balance will host food truck tours across LA to celebrate its state presence in Southern California. The tour will feature free samples, coupons, swag, and prizes at universities, schools, and festivals.

Gaining presence in target markets

Better Balance focuses on providing plant-based alternatives for people trying to be healthier, from reducetarians to vegans. Its US portfolio includes shreds, grounds for Bolognese pasta or hamburgers, hot dogs, sour cream, and cheese.

In addition to the US, the company continues to introduce products and gain a presence in its target markets, Spain and Mexico. With vegan steak specialist Chunk Foodsthe company co-branded a plant-based whole cut called “Better-nera” for the Spanish market. Plans are to introduce a similar steak in Latin America, but the companies have not
revealed where yet.

Guerra adds, “Our products have received outstanding reviews from our food service partners and consumers, and we’re excited to have Gelson’s help us expand in the California market.”
