An event claimed to be the first-ever environment-focused rugby match is set to take place at Richmond Athletic Ground, London, on September 8.
Called The Big Green Clash, the event is spearheaded by Green Gazelles, who are said to be the world’s first earth-friendly and plant-powered rugby team. The invitational club has over 250 members and aims to promote sustainability and compassion for animals through rugby.
“The Big Green Clash isn’t just a rugby match; it’s a networking goldmine”
Green Gazelles will play against Richmond Rugby, with the winner claiming the Earth Shield. Former professionals and celebrities are expected to make an appearance in the Green Gazelles squad, and the match will raise funds for various environmental causes.
The rugby match will be preceded by a Sports Climate Summit, featuring VIP attendees and speakers including Heather Mills, cycling world record holder Kate Strong, Jamie Laing of vegan brand Candy Kittens, TV presenter Clare Nasir, Sport Positive CEO Claire Poole, Luke Sheriff of PROVERB, James Higgins of Ethical Bedding, and DJ Joshua Roberts, among others. There will also be a family-friendly Eco Village offering food and sustainable items.

“Not just a rugby match”
According to Brendon Bale, founder and CEO of Green Gazelles Rugby Club, the Big Green Clash could start more conversations around how the sporting world can help to create important change. Over 100 influential organisations will be represented at the event, including Veganuary, World Rugby, ProVeg, The Vegan Society, Plant Based Health Professionals, Norwich FC, and more.
The potential for change in the sporting world has previously been seen with vegan and carbon-neutral football club Forest Green Rovers, which has been recognised by FIFA and the United Nations as the world’s greenest football club. With The Big Green Clash, Bale hopes to “kick carbon emissions firmly into touch”.
“The Big Green Clash isn’t just a rugby match; it’s a networking goldmine, with over 100 organisations attending our Sports Climate Summit prior to kick-off,” he said. “This unique event brings together passionate environmentalists, pro athletes, and thought leaders, sparking urgent discussions on how sport can inspire a greener future.”
