Veganuary Launches ‘Choose Chicken-Free Week’ in the US With Nationwide Initiatives

Veganuary, the non-profit initiative encouraging plant-based diets, is initiating its “Choose Chicken-Free Week” starting next Monday, accompanied by a range of discounts and special offerings from various brands and eateries across the United States.

Following the successful introduction of over 2,000 new vegan products and dishes worldwide during Veganuary 2024, the organization aims to foster long-term dietary changes with the support of campaigns throughout the year. According to a survey conducted among Veganuary participants, 82% expressed intentions to either adopt a fully vegan lifestyle or substantially reduce animal product consumption post-January.

Veganuary’s Choose Chicken-Free Week aims to demonstrate the accessibility of plant-based alternatives to chicken and eggs, addressing the mounting concerns regarding avian flu outbreaks and the sustainability of conventional poultry production.

Coinciding with Respect for Chickens Day, the campaign, scheduled from April 29 to May 5, will feature an array of informative resources and vegan recipes, with a focus on egg and chicken substitutes available on the Veganuary website.

US Director at Veganuary, Sandra Hungate, noted the versatility of egg replacements in culinary applications: “There are many simple and surprising ways to replace eggs in your favorite recipes. From everyday ingredients like banana and apple sauce to culinary innovations like aquafaba – the liquid from a can of chickpeas which can be whipped into a beautiful meringue – there’s an egg-free swap out there for everything from breakfast to dessert!” 

Ongoing initiatives

The movement extends beyond January, with ongoing initiatives like #ChooseChickenFree illustrating Veganuary’s commitment to promoting plant-based lifestyles throughout the year. Additional campaigns planned for the summer, such as Choose Fish-Free Week, BBQ Month, and Choose Dairy-Free Week, aim to further educate the public on the benefits of embracing veganism.

To commemorate Choose Chicken-Free Week, several leading brands are rolling out exclusive offers and novel chicken-free options:

  • Veggie Grill and Next Level Burger will introduce limited-time offers on May 3.
  • Ike’s Love & Sandwiches will showcase three sandwiches featuring vegan chicken throughout the week.
