Fast-Rising Plant-Based Chicken Brand ‘Daring’ Raises $8M, Launches New Product Today

Scotland’s daring Foods, maker of plant-based chicken, announces a $8 million Series A funding round led by Maveron with participation from various additional investors including Stray Dog Capital, to support its mission to remove chicken from the food system. Today the startup also reveals a brand new product which launches DTC.

Founded in 2018 by Ross Mackay and Eliott Kessas, daring’s chicken products made of five simple ingredients launched into the US at the end of 2019 through a strategic partnership with food service supplier Rastelli Foods Group, and this March into Spouts stores across the US.

Chicken is one of the most popular meat products in the world, and daring aims to offer a sustainable and healthy plant-based alternative for families which often consume it six to ten times a week. Today the young brand announces the launch of its new product – Breaded daring Pieces, as part of its existing portfolio of 100% plantbased chicken in Original, Cajun, and Lemon & Herb flavors.

The founders state that the $8 million will be utilised to drive its continued growth through marketing, innovation and recruitment.

“At daring we’ve been able to create the cleanest plant-based chicken on the market that gets as close as possible to the taste and texture of the real thing,” said daring’s CEO and Co-Founder, Ross Mackay. “We are excited to have attracted a group of investors that have been involved in building monumental consumer businesses and we will leverage this investment to continue our growth in an ever-changing, competitive landscape. This gets us a huge step closer to mitigating the negative impact of the poultry industry on the planet and human health.”

daring’s new Breaded pieces are available online at daring.com and in daring’s new retail locations including Gelson’s, Bristol Farms, and Fresh Thyme, with a national launch at Just Salad to follow.
