Stella McCartney Debuts “First Ever” Garment Made With Plant-Based Sequins

Stella McCartney has developed what is claimed to be the first ever garment made from plastic-free, plant-based sequins. The sleeveless Biosequin® jumpsuit has made its debut on the cover of American Vogue, modelled by Cara Delevigne. It is not yet commercially available, but is said to showcase the potential benefits of the material. Developed by a company called Radiant Matter, which specialises in “colour and material solutions for the circular economy”, Biosequins are made from plant-derived cellulose. They are fully biodegradable and contain no plastic, metals, minerals, or synthetic pigments.  According to Stella McCartney, conventional sequins are made from synthetic materials such as PVC or polyester film, which are harmful to the environment and contain chemicals that could have a negative impact on human health. …

New Guidelines from the BRC Ensure Vegan Fashion is 100% Animal-Free

New guidelines have been set out by the British Retail Consortium, now that vegan fashion is on the rise, to ensure that clothes, shoes and accessories claiming to be vegan are in fact genuinely 100% free of animal products. The BRC in its new guidelines tells retailers to be cautious and not to make any claims of sustainability simply because it appears to be animal-free.  All claims should be substantiated, and fashion labels must not claim a product is sustainable simply because it contains no animal derived materials. The organisation collaborated with its members in the production of this “Voluntary Guideline on Veganism in Fashion” in order for the growing number of shops and brands to faithfully adhere to expected standards and be able to …

How AlgiKnit Plans to Transform the Fashion Ecosystem with Seaweed Fibers

AlgiKnit is a New York-based biotech start-up producing durable seaweed yarns. The company aims to conserve the maritime ecosystem whilst creating a sustainable and ethical fiber which can be processed into textiles for the fashion industry. To produce the yarn, the research team extracts a substance called alginate from seaweed or algae. The alginate is combined with other renewable biopolymers for further processing. The biodegradable fibre is strong and elastic enough to be knitted into a textile. It is also suitable for use in 3D printing processes. The yarn gets its colour from natural pigments. Compared to conventional industrial dyeing, less water is required, and the use of toxic dyeing chemicals is completely unnecessary. The entire production process also has a very low carbon footprint. …
