Jeremy Coller White Paper Calls for “Ever-Green Revolution” to End Factory Farming

A new white paper released by the Jeremy Coller Foundation argues that the Green Revolution is no longer working and must give way to a more sustainable system. The Revolution was a period of initiatives that greatly increased agricultural production, and began as a way to address hunger after the Second World War. But though it succeeded in the short-term, the Foundation argues that there are long-term unintended consequences. In particular, higher crop yields have made it possible to produce ever more meat and dairy products, fuelling a level of demand described as “unhealthy”. In turn, this has paved the way for factory farming, which has huge environmental consequences such as excessive water use, high levels of greenhouse emissions, and pollution. Intensive farming is also …

Majority of UK Consumers Could Not Buy Chicken After Seeing Images of Factory Farms

A new survey has found that the majority of UK consumers would shop and eat differently if they knew more about the factory farming of chickens. The findings show how consumers feel “kept in the dark” regarding the reality of chicken farming in the country, and more than two-thirds of respondents would buy plant-based chicken if it tasted similar.  The survey of more than 5,000 people in the UK was commissioned by activism-focused plant-based chicken company VFC, with the key findings as follows: Only 16% of people said they would buy a chicken from a factory farm once they had seen images of a typical industrial farm. 80% of people thought it important to know where their food is produced, yet only 15% knew the …

The move has been opposed by agribusiness lobbyists, but MEPs voted in favour of the plan which may eventually put a stop to some of the horrors of intensive animal agriculture.   “This strategy has the potential to bring our food system back within planetary boundaries by moving away from intensive livestock farming and towards more plant-based foods” – Jasmijn De Boo, ProVeg International When in place, the Farm to Fork Strategy would trigger a shift away from intensive factory farming, backed up by the EU’s recent historic commitment to phase out cages in animal farming throughout the bloc. …
