Cabbage Hill Develops Animal-Free Fertilizer to “Get the Crap Out of Gardening”

Cabbage Hill Fertilizer is a US company producing organic, animal-free fertilizers, with the aim of promoting soil health, composting, community gardening, and food justice. Cabbage Hill was founded by Erin Riley, who previously started an edible landscaping company in 2009. After beginning to mix her own fertilizer blends, Riley began to question where the animal inputs came from. She discovered that the components of organic fertilizer often originate from slaughtered animals, meaning that “vegetables aren’t vegan”. Furthermore, these components may be declared “certified organic” even though their origins are often unregulated. In response, Riley decided to develop a range of animal-free fertilizers. Germany’s Biocyclic Vegan Agriculture Association Celebrates 5 Years of Promoting Animal-Free Farming Practices

The German Association for the Promotion of Biocyclic Vegan Agriculture, Förderkreis Biozyklisch-Veganer Anbau e.V., recently celebrated its 5th anniversary, raising awareness of the advantages of organic vegan farming.  Founded and based in Berlin, the “Förderkreis” collaborates with international partner organizations in the Biocyclic Vegan International network. Its goal is to provide education in German-speaking countries on farming without the use of commercial livestock, animal slaughter, chemical fertilizers, or animal inputs. Biocyclic Vegan Agriculture aims to establish a new human-animal relationship in the agricultural sector. The German non-profit also advises gardeners and farmers on the practices that must be followed to obtain the IFOAM-accredited Biocyclic Vegan Standard. PETA UK Celebrates “Sowers of Compassion” With First Farming Awards

The first ever PETA UK Farming Awards has taken place, recognising ten farms across the country for their contributions to ethical, animal-free farming. The winners include growers of seafood, a producer of soybeans for tofu, and a former beef farmer who sent his cows to a sanctuary. The award winners are as follows: Aweside Farm — A grower of organic edible flowers, leaves, and herbs. The farm is also working to create habitats for wildlife, such as ponds, meadows, and hedgerows.
