Harvard Study Links More Plant Proteins and Less Meat to Lower Heart Disease Risk

Shifting diets to incorporate more plants and less meat is recommended for environmental and health benefits, including heart health. Researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health have found that consuming more plant-based than animal-based proteins is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD). Since most diet recommendations do not mention optimal meal portions, the researchers embarked on a study to examine the associations between different plant-to-animal protein ratios and CVD risk. They analyzed 30 years of data from approximately 203,000 adults in the US, including diet, lifestyle, and heart health, with dietary intake reported every four years. The study also assessed the joint effects of the plant-to-animal protein ratio with protein density (percentage of total calories …

Report Finds Plant-Based Meat a Healthy Option: Challenging Ultra-Processed Myths

A new report by the Good Food Institute Europe suggests that plant-based meat in Europe offers a good nutritional profile on average, which may lead to various health advantages. The report, reviewed by food scientists and health experts, analyzed recent studies conducted in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden comparing plant-based and animal meat, to determine the nutritional profile of plant-based meat against EU guidelines. Furthermore, plant-based meat, which meets the EU definition of high-protein foods, offers similar protein calories to conventional meat in all categories …

Study: Vegan Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce Risk of Heart Disease

In a recent study published in the Journal of Hypertension, scientists found that regular consumption of omega-3-rich foods helps to improve blood pressure. According to the study, high blood pressure is one of the main risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. However, the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids can also vary depending on the source. Another study published in July in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews investigated and compared the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from dietary supplements, fish, vegetable oils and whole foods such as walnuts. The results of the study showed, among other things, that omega-3 supplementation does not reduce the risk of death from heart disease, but nevertheless reduces heart irregularities. A small number of subjects who consumed only vegan, plant-based …
