NGO Vegetarianos Hoy to Identify Plant-Based Consumption Habits in LATAM

The NGO Vegetarianos Hoy launched its Latin American Consumer Survey this week to obtain insights into consumer preferences for plant-based foods and products. The study targets five countries: Peru, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. As veganism is rising in Latin America, the study will focus on consumption habits and identifying consumer motives for migrating to a plant-based diet. It will collect relevant data to develop future awareness campaigns on the benefits of changing to more sustainable eating habits, explains the NGO. Vegetarianos Hoy has been active in the region since 2017, promoting animal welfare and more ethical, healthy, and sustainable eating habits. NYC Public Schools Now Serving Vegan Meals to Nearly 1M Students

Starting today, New York City Public Schools – the largest school district in the US – will begin serving vegan meals to students as part of the Vegan Fridays initiative. NYC may be the first major school district to offer a fully vegan lunch menu; some California schools are also considering similar programs. Plant-based veggie tacos, Mediterranean chickpeas and black bean and plantain bowls are a few of the items that will feature on the menu, replacing traditional dairy-based entrees such as pizza and macaroni ‘n cheese.  Promoted by NYC mayor Eric Adams, a long-time vegan and health advocate, the new program follows the success of Meatless Mondays and Meatless Fridays, previously implemented in NYC schools in 2019 and 2021, respectively. New Vegan-Friendly Coalition to Help Hospitals Provide Plant-Based Meals in 2020

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the Humane Society of the United States, Oldways, Health Care Without Harm, and Meatless Monday are five nonprofits that have partnered to create the Plant-Based Hospital Food Coalition. This Coalition will provide support, resources, and hands-on training to hospital culinary teams to help them provide more plant-based meals.
