Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense to Include Vegan Military Rations From December 2024

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has announced plans to include kosher, halal, and vegan military rations starting from December 2024. The new ready-to-eat foods aim to meet the needs of military personnel, respecting their beliefs, health considerations, and ethical principles. They will be introduced following the completion of the development and approval process. According to the announcement, consultations have already occurred with various religious leaders and communities, and animal rights organizations such as Every Animal and UAnimals, which contributed to developing vegan rations with similar calorie content, nutritional value, ease of preparation, and price as traditional meals. US Department of Defense Calls for Proposals to Develop Cultivated Meat for Military Rations

The U.S. Department of Defense’s manufacturing innovation institute, BioMADE, has released a call for proposals to develop sustainable food and material solutions for military operations through its Sustainable Logistics for Advanced Manufacturing (SLAM) Project. The project seeks solutions to address the causes or impacts of global climate change, including sustainable food production such as fermented proteins and cultivated meat. According to BioMADE, the proposals must emphasize their technological components and demonstrate a DoD-relevant application of the innovation within one of the specified focus areas. Academic institutions, small businesses, and non-profit organizations can apply for awards ranging from $500,000 to $2 million. ESS Partners With MOD Vegan & Vegetarian Network to Provide Plant-Based Food to UK Armed Forces

Support services provider ESS has announced a collaboration with the MOD Vegan & Vegetarian Network to help members of the Armed Forces follow a plant-based diet. The Network is a community connecting vegetarians and vegans across the military services, along with providing support to help them maintain their lifestyles. ESS provides soft facilities services to 250 military establishments UK-wide, and is already working to offer more plant-based options and less meat on its menus. 27% of the company’s core menu is currently vegetarian or vegan, while a further 30% of dishes are plant-forward (meaning at least 30% of the meat has been replaced with plants). Under New Defense Bill, US Navy May Begin Serving Plant-Based Meats in 2023

The United States Navy may begin testing plant-based meats at some Naval bases in 2023. A provision recently added to the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act would create a three-year pilot program to offer plant-based protein options at a minimum of two Navy operating bases. If fully approved, the program would take effect by March of next year.  Cost-saving measure Introduced by Rep.
